Heloisa to Piet and Rod
Piet and Rod,
Several times during
the day, I
tried to enter a dual awareness of both the Immediate Moment, the
Remembered
Past and the Anticipated Future. The simultaneous awareness of Depth
and
Breadth.
For a brief
moment lasting no
more than a few seconds, I was able to enter a state of awareness of
the Moment. And everything became very
clear to me. There was no difference at all between Depth and Breadth.
Everything was comprised in that simple Moment.
And how simple it all was.
A haiku by
Basho, a Zen master,
came to mind:
The old pond.
A frog jumps in
Plop!
This haiku
is said to represent
the moment in which Basho realized that all questions concerning the
universe
were answered by the simple sound of the falling frog.
I worked on
this practice in the
midst of sadness triggered by an external event. The physical tension
associated to that sadness was present throughout the entire day. This
might
have interfered with the practice, but then again, maybe those few
seconds were
all that was needed.
